Who Needs a Food Handler Card in Utah?

Utah Administrative Code R392-100 and Utah Code 26B-5-112 require all food handlers to obtain a Food Handler Card from an Utah Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) approved provider. This applies to anyone who prepares, stores, or serves food in a commercial setting. The Utah DHHS oversees food handler training requirements statewide, though individual county environmental health departments handle enforcement.

Utah Food Scene

Utah has a food culture deeply shaped by its LDS majority population and its spectacular outdoor recreation economy. Fry sauce — a blend of ketchup and mayonnaise invented at Arctic Circle restaurants in Salt Lake City — is Utah's proprietary condiment, served with fries everywhere in the state and virtually nowhere else. Funeral potatoes (a cheesy hash brown casserole covered in cornflakes that appears at every church potluck and family gathering) are so embedded in Utah culture that the state put them on the 2002 Winter Olympics commemorative pin. Utah scones — puffy squares of fried dough served with honey butter — are not the flaky biscuit variety found elsewhere, and the difference matters a great deal to Utahns.
Known for: Fry sauce (Utah original), funeral potatoes (cheesy hash brown casserole), Utah scones (fried dough), Jell-O
