Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a food handler permit in Utah?
Yes, if you work with unpackaged food, food equipment or utensils, or food-contact surfaces in a Utah food service establishment. Utah Code §26B-7-413 sets the rule statewide. Certified food safety managers are exempt.
When do I need to take the course?
Within 14 days of starting food work. When you pass, you get a certificate good for 30 days, and we send your record and the $15 fee to your local health department, which issues your permit. The course takes about 75 minutes, so you can finish it before your first shift.
Is my certificate the same as my permit?
No. When you pass, you get a certificate of completion right away, good for 30 days. It shows you finished approved training. Your permit comes from your local health department and is valid for three years.
How do I get my permit after the course?
Utah requires approved providers to send your training record to your local health department within seven days. We do that, and we collect the $15 permit fee at checkout, so the department can issue your permit. How it reaches you depends on the department; Utah County and Southwest Utah mail it.
How much does a Utah food handler permit cost?
$23 in total with us: $8 for the course plus the $15 permit fee, which state rule caps at $15.
Can I take the course online?
Yes. Utah allows approved courses online, and we're on the Utah Department of Health and Human Services' list of approved online providers. Your certificate is valid with any local health department in Utah.
What if I fail the exam?
A free retake is included. Utah's exam has 40 multiple-choice questions, and you need 75% to pass.
What if I lose my permit?
Only your local health department can replace a lost permit, and it may charge a fee.
Is the Utah course ANAB-accredited?
No. Utah approves food handler courses itself, through its Department of Health and Human Services, and ours is on the state's approved list. ANAB accreditation isn't part of Utah's process.
